Immigration- Note-taking practice

We have been looking at analysing speeches and discourse of different genres as a step to help us be better prepared for consecutive interpreting.

The video below is about immigration compliance. It is an info commercial, so sorry about the commercial aspect of it, but I think it will be very useful for you.

Law and Justice

This week's topic is Law and Justice. There is currently a debate in our country about the proposed changes to the Australian Racial Discrimination Act. This video of Senator Penny Wong is a very good  one to practise your note-taking and consecutive interpreting skills.

How can you practise consecutive interpreting at home?

There are many sites with video/audio materials that you can use to practise note-taking and consecutive interpreting skills. You can check educational institutions where translating and interpreting is taught, websites dedicated to famous speeches by politicians, famous speeches on films, TEd talks, university podcasts (iTunesU), radio programs (e.g. ABC Law Report), etc. Check the permanent links on the right side bar.

Today I am introducing WISE Interpreting Workshop speeches for consecutive practice. This is a project by The London Metropolitan University and the Universidad Europea de Valencia.

Telephone Interpreting-Spanish

I follow several groups on facebook on ESL or interpreting related issues. Through one of them I received this video about telephone interpreting published by the University of Vigo. Check the University of Vigo website and use this video for practice in interpreting an introduction to the key note speaker. There are several videos for this lecture. The one I selected is the beginning of the lecture. Note how the presenter mentions Australia! As usual, use the video to take notes and practise your interpreting skils.

Helping a student find background materials for an Ethics assignment I came across some very interesting resources. One of them was a slide show on professional liability. It was published by a member of MiTiN, the equivalent to our AUSIT in Michigan.

The other thing that I thought may interest you is this entry in the MiTiN blog, When experience is your only dictionary. I hope you enjoy it and keep it in mind when we next meet after the holidays and I give you a problematic text to translate.
