Immigration- Note-taking practice

Hi all,

We have been looking at analysing speeches and discourse of different genres as a step to help us be better prepared for consecutive interpreting.

The video below is about immigration compliance. It is an info commercial, so sorry about the commercial aspect of it, but I think it will be very useful for you.

I have created a worksheet with some hints on how to use the video.

Law and Justice

This week's topic is Law and Justice. There is currently a debate in our country about the proposed changes to the Australian Racial Discrimination Act. This video of Senator Penny Wong is a very good  one to practise your note-taking and consecutive interpreting skills.

This post on Court Interpreting  will give you some background on the latest developments in legal interpreting studies in Australia as well as a sobering look at the situation of legal interpreting in Spain.

How can you practise consecutive interpreting at home?

There are many sites with video/audio materials that you can use to practise note-taking and consecutive interpreting skills. You can check educational institutions where translating and interpreting is taught, websites dedicated to famous speeches by politicians, famous speeches on films, TEd talks, university podcasts (iTunesU), radio programs (e.g. ABC Law Report), etc. Check the permanent links on the right side bar.

Today I am introducing WISE Interpreting Workshop speeches for consecutive practice. This is a project by The London Metropolitan University and the Universidad Europea de Valencia.

Maru was telling us about a video that made her cry at work. What a coincidence that as soon as I got home a friend of mine who lives in NY had sent me exactly the same video! Here it is for you to practise your not-taking skills, consecutive interpreting skills and subtitling attempts. Below I am also posting a second video that would be perfect for the same type of practice. Only that the subtitles have already been written! Check them out. Would you do them in the same way? Note Taking Continued

As promised, this is the video we were talking about in class yesterday. It is a 1999 lecture on consecutive interpretation delivered by Nick Roche to a small group of interpreting students.

This week our topic was Government and international relations. You can use the video below to practice your note-taking skills . Check the section on minute 8:00 where he talks about the changes in international relations between Latin American countries and Europe.

Finally, listen to this interview with an architect about local governmet regulation relating to building matters. You can access a worksheet that will help you with your glossary compilation and comprehension of the discourse.

In a previous post, Note Taking for Consecutive Interpreting , we watched some videos on note-taking techniques. Today you can check this site, Interpreter Training Resources. Even though it is aimed at a French audience, the skills described are transferable, and often they use English examples, like;
The rule of thumb is that unless a word is short (4-5 letters) the interpreter should note it in an abbreviated form.

Note Taking for Consecutive Interpreting

On a previous post, we had a look at some great examples of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. I know some of you have to take the final exam for consecutive interpreting very shortly. Check the videos below for great advice on note taking.
